Description
Power Trunk Lid (PTL) System : It is automatically opens and closes a vehicle’s trunk lid and cinches the latch with the press of a button, and also can be easily operated, using an interior switch or a remote keyless entry device.
Trunk Position And Direction
The PTL System will measure the Trunk Position via a integrated hall sensor inside the drive unit motor. The moving direction of trunk lid will be detected by analyze the current direction of the motor. The hall sensor counting (position detection) is active during power operation mode and during manual mode.
Drive motor power control
The drive motor power will be controlled by using a PWM (power motor) with a frequency of 20 kHz. Depending on the expected and the actual trunk lid speed, the ECU will adjust the power motor to achieve the requested opening and closing speed.
Trunk speed control
For controlling the trunk lid speed overcoming aging, temperature effects and vehicle inclination a regulation is included. The regulation is comparing the actual motor speed with the requested motor speed. Depending on the comparison result, the speed will be adjusted, buy increasing or decreasing the power motor.
System Components
1.
PTL Drive Unit (A).

Power trunk lid drive unit consists of motor & driven gear, PTL module, PTL motor and drive arm.
PTL drive unit is located in rear left trunk trim. PTL drive unit opens and closes the trunk connected push rod automatically.
2.
Power latch (A)

Trunk opened by actuator after releases of latch’s lock.
Built in the Micro switch for monitoring the latch lock & unlock status.
3.
Power Striker

By using actuator cinching the striker to go down strongly when the trunk is closed by motor.
Built in the micro switch for monitoring the striker’s position.
4.
SMK(Smart key)

Push the power trunk lid open of the SMK more than 0.1s to open the power trunk. Power Open operation shall be reversed when an additional Open/Close signal is received during power opening.
5.
Trunk inner switch (A)

Operating flow: Trunk Open
1.
Opening can be triggered receiving a signal from followings.
(Trunk outside handle S/W, Crash pad S/W (Push), SMK trunk open button)
2.
Power striker actuator will move the striker shaft by 6mm. (Full Close > Pop up)
3.
Release the locked E-latch.
4.
PTL module controls the driving motor, sector gear, push rod in order to open.
5.
The rotating speed of motor can be measured by Hall sensor which is built in motor.
A.
In case the motor speed is lower than target value: Motor torque increases.
B.
In case the motor speed is faster than target value: Motor torque decreases.
6.
Opening angle of trunk is calculated by counting the input pulse signal from Hall sensor.
x When PTL decides that motor restriction is caused by an obstruction while opening the trunk lid, it stops after operating 50mm repulsive movement.
PTL Operating Flow (Trunk Close)

Operating flow: Trunk Close
1.
Closing can be triggered receiving a signal from followings.
(Trunk trim S/W, Crash pad S/W (Push) > It works while it is being pushed only.
2.
PTL module controls the driving motor, sector gear, push rod in order to close.
3.
Closing angle of trunk is calculated by the input pulse signal from Hall sensor.
4.
The rotating speed of motor can be measured by Hall sensor which is built in motor.
A.
In case the motor speed is lower than target value: Motor torque increases.
B.
In case the motor speed is faster than target value: Motor torque decreases.
x If motor has restriction force during closing, it may be opened by repulsive force
5.
E-Latch contacts with the power striker shaft, and then E-Latch is locked mechanically. (Unlock > Lock)
6.
PTL module makes stop the PTL motor operation after detecting the E-Latch’s lock signal.
7.
Power striker actuator works and then make shaft position to move by 6mm. (Pop up > Full Close)

The table in the slide is to explain the operation of power trunk lid considering all cases of vehicle speed, anti-theft status, door condition and key status. As it is mentioned previously, some of the PTL switch is available to open and close but some of them is only for close.
Vehicle speed: Stop or Driving
This is based on the vehicle speed signal; if the vehicle speed is lower than 3kph, it will be assumed as a ‘vehicle stop’. If the vehicle speed is over 3kph, it is the ‘vehicle driving’ condition.
Key Status: If the ignition is inserted into the ignition cylinder (without PIC).
Door condition: Be sure that its condition is only for lock or unlock status. Don’t confuse with the door open or close.
Some conditions cannot be occurred actually so that the case was expressed by the symbol of ‘-’ (NA) in the table. Also when the vehicle is running (’vehicle driving’), there is no meaning to think the case of ‘Key Out’ so that those cases were eliminated in the table.

Anti-Theft

- Turn off the trunk main switch in the glove box  
: Impossible to open & close by motor
2. All door lock or pre arm mode status
- Impossible to open by the trunk outside handle
3.By using RKE, open a trunk under the pre arm mode (ARM HOLD)
- Hazard lamp blinks 3 times for warning open & close the trunk.

When PTL decides that motor restriction is caused by an obstruction at opening the trunk lid, it stops after operating 50mm to the reverse direction. If motor has restriction force at closing, it may be opened fully by repulsive force.

PTL can be operated at the speed of less than 3Km/h. When trunk is opened and closed after entering into ARM WAIT, the emergency lamp will blink 3 times.
Using the scan tool, the self-diagnose and input/output for sensor and actuator data can be inspected.
